  • Day 871

Damn. Gotta get back to writing!

  • Day 870

    Oops… will write Sunday.

  • Day 868

Yesterday was a bad day. I ate too much chicken, and despite not eating anything after 3:30pm, I still gained a lot of weight this morning. I will try to get back on track today.

  • Day 867

Today was not a great day. It was not a horrible day either, but I ate too much. Grrr.

  • Day 866

Following my first day on the modified program, my weight was up… but only very slightly. .2 lb. is within the margin of error of no actual change, but that does not change the fact that I was hoping to see at least a slight drop. It is, of course, difficult to lose weight when one sits at one’s desk for thirteen hours in a day. I am actually surprised to see that I managed to log nearly 7,500 steps! Walking my dog saved the day on that front.

My plan for today is to do exactly as I did yesterday with regard to food intake. The only change I will make is that I will try to have my second (last) meal replacement at least an hour earlier than I did yesterday. I was lecturing until 9:15pm, and that is really too late to eat.

With the fact that these last few days have been mostly negative, let me share at least one bit of positivity: I am wearing my sports jackets. I would not fit into all of them, but at least I am able to wear a few of them. Yesterday I wore the purple one, and today I am wearing the blue one. I am looking forward to being able to wear any of the clothes in my closet again… but that will take some time.

The meal replacements that I ordered arrived yesterday, and they are the new formula. A lot of the people on my Facebook group had a lot of bad things to say about them, and so I was a little worried. While I still think I prefer the old formula, the new one is not bad. I know I will be able to get used to them.

Despite my adding fibre to both meal replacements yesterday, I was still not satisfied with my bowel movement this morning. It was not completely zero… but it was not very satisfactory. I know I could have done better, and that if I continue to add fibre then I will.

It is time for me to get to work… have a great day folks!

  • Day 865

I fell off the rails yesterday and I paid the price. I gained a full two pounds this morning. Ouch.

As I spoke with my wife last night, she helped me to remember that I have really been pushing myself way past my limits since I started, and my body really needed a break. She was more concerned that I might not get back onto the program, but I assured her that I would.

Because of how weak I felt Saturday evening and all day yesterday, I decided that to make sure I was able to get through this extremely grueling work week I would switch to my modified program. Yesterday may have been a cheat day, but today I have done exactly as planned: I had an omelette for breakfast, chicken and salad for lunch, and before my evening class I prepared a meal replacement shake. I received my delivery from the company today, and they were the new formula. I was worried about it, but they are actually pretty good. I will be able to continue with them. In the meantime, this week will be the modified program.

If I can just get through to the weekend then I can reevaluate my position. I am hoping that I will be able to shed these three pounds that I gained over the last two days, but I do not expect to lose much more than that this week. I am working all day (and three nights) so I will not be doing a lot of movement. Getting back to where I was Saturday would be a victory.

    Have a great evening folks!

  • Day 864

I was not impressed when I stepped onto the bathroom scale this morning to find that I had actually gained weight… and not just an ounce, but 1.2 lbs.! Grrr. This is going to happen sometimes, but I did not expect it to happen so early in my program. Had I fallen off track yesterday then I would have felt that it was at least warranted, but I did not. I did change the program a little, but not badly… and certainly not ‘gain over a pound in a day’ badly!

Firstly, my change to the program: I had my morning and midday meal replacements at around the normal times. I came in from walking Her Royal Floofness at 9:30am and had Shake #1, and then at around 1:30pm I had Shake #2. Eduardo came over for a cigar at 2:00pm, and when he left, I went out for a jog/walk (at 3:30pm). When I came back, I had a shower and then instead of a shake, I had a protein bar. I was still very hungry, so I decided to go to the store to buy almonds. I bought 90g of unsalted almonds, and that was the extent of my cheat. I drank my final shake of the evening after a cigar – around 9:00pm.

<Warning> The following paragraph contains a tasteless joke that may be considered offensive by some readers.

Yes, I went over my 900 calories by about 500 calories, but I was still under 1500 calories on the day… and while there is a lot of (healthy) fat in those almonds, the 5g of carbs that I added to my day should not have accounted for this blip. Who knows, maybe it’s my time of the month?

    </Warning>

I am now 100% convinced that the calibration of my treadmill and fitness watch (with respect to the Treadmill activity) are completely wrong. It was a beautiful day, and I decided to do my first outdoors run/walk. I jogged two kilometres and walked 8.5km. On the basis of what my treadmill measures, that would be roughly 18 minutes of jogging (with the pace set to 4.3mph) and 2 hours of walking (at 3.5mph) … yet I completed the jogging in 14m10s (about 5.25mph), and the walking in 1h16.5m (around 4mph). I did not feel like I was walking or jogging harder on the street than I do on the treadmill. I will have to remember this if I ever do decide to train for a marathon!

Following my exercise, I took Floof for her walk. We walked our usual turn which took us through the park and the playground. Because we were out at a different time than our norm, where we encountered a different crowd of children with their mothers. There was a group of five mothers speaking Arabic with a Palestinian accent, three of whom were wearing pendants shaped like the entire State of Israel (including Judea, Samaria, and Gaza). It was only five years ago that I discovered that this pendant, in the shape of a map that I have been familiar with since grade school, is their symbol calling for ‘From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free.’ Normally I would not warrant a second glance from any of them, but it so happens that I was wearing an IDF t-shirt (I was fresh from my exercise and had not yet changed when we went out), and so the group of them stopped talking, and glared at me with a hatred in their eyes that I seldom feel in Canada. We did not stop or even slow our pace. A few blocks out of the park, we encountered an SUV flying a large Palestinian flag. They were stopped at a stop sign, and we were stopped because Princess was sniffing around. They stopped for longer than they needed to, the eyes of the driver and passenger glaring at me. I smiled and pointed at the logo on my chest. I had never realized how many Palestinians live within a six-block radius of me. I will be paying closer attention. I will not stop wearing my t-shirts (when I jog) and my pins… but I will be more cognizant of those watching me. It is sad that in Canada I have to be aware of these things… but that has always been the lot of my people.

I have been having trouble with the program I am on… as is demonstrated by the fact that I have had to supplement it with almonds almost every day of it. Combine that with my activity (which has been exceedingly high these last ten days) and I find my body completely out of energy in the afternoons and evenings. Because of this I told Leslie that I am thinking about transitioning back to what I used to call my partial program – breakfast and lunch, and then two shakes in the afternoon and evening. She recommended that I wait either until I hit the 270 lbs. mark (from which I am now more than a pound farther than I was yesterday), or until at least next Wednesday (when she picks up her son, and so goes off the program). I thanked her for her encouragement… without it, I would have gone shopping this morning. As it is, I am still thinking about it. It is 11:00am – I had my first meal replacement less than two hours ago, and I am already hungry and light-headed. I will not make any decisions yet… but if I am feeling this way still after my second meal replacement then I am seriously going to consider it. I have a very long week of teaching ahead of me, and I cannot afford to faint on camera.

It has been rainy all morning, although that is set to abate by 1:00pm. I have not decided what I am going to do about exercising today… with my goal-streak at 13 days, and knowing there is no way to extend it beyond 14 days, I can either push myself to hit the 16,400 steps my watch is challenging me to hit today, or I can take it easy and rest my body (which I have overtaxed these last ten days). I have a number of decisions to make today. I will not rush into any of them.

    Have a great day folks!

  • Day 863

I admit I was hoping to drop below 276 lbs. this morning, but it was not to be. My weight stayed exactly where it was yesterday… and I have to wait at least another day before I can cross off another number on the fridge chart. I should mention that while my caloric intake and activities were about right yesterday, I was not able to move my bowels this morning. Hopefully that will happen later in the day.

I knew when I stepped onto the treadmill yesterday that I likely would not be able to jog as far as I had the previous day. I set my goal to jog at least 4km (at a slightly quicker pace), but then to walk another 3km if I could. That would match the distance for the previous day, and almost guarantee that my steps goal streak would be extended. Indeed, it was extended to twelve days, and with the progressive scale of my fitness watch, today’s goal is 15.400 to extend that streak. I would really like to extend it today and tomorrow, giving me a 14-day streak (possibly my best since switching from Fitbit to Garmin nearly five years ago. Of course, knowing what my work schedule looks like next week, that is the extent of what is possible. Monday I am working from 8:30am until 9:15pm, and while it is theoretically possible for me to fit in a workout, it is unlikely. With that, my goal is to hit my 14-day goal streak. I will try to do that by actually going out for a jog this afternoon, but I am not sure yet. It is a beautiful day out, and I think I am caught up on my shows… but I am really enjoying the audio book that I am listening to (Mario Puzo’s The Godfather).

I stand corrected. My longest goal streak was actually sixteen days… from April 10-25, 2023. That is probably at the peak of my jogging – looking at the record, I see eight workouts of over 10km, and one two-hour jog of 15km! Wow, I would love to be able to get back to that in the next few months. I have my work cut out for me… but in the meantime, I see that my weight in that period fluctuated between 264 lbs. and 253 lbs. … and when I was jogging 15km I weighed about 23 lbs. less than I did this morning. I will get there; I am sure of it!

My eating yesterday was not great, but I think I did okay with regard to mitigating my lapse. After my post-workout shower, I ate a protein bar, as I said I would. My energy level was still bordering on zero, so I decided to go to the car and eat the break-glass almonds that were there. I did that prior to my class at about 5:15pm. I then prepared my third meal replacement at around 7:45pm. After my class I debated whether or not to prepare the last one and decided that I should not. I was a bit hungry for my last couple of awake hours, but I made it through to bedtime.

I have a Zoom call in a few minutes with an old friend and colleague who now lives in Prince Edward Island, and then an hour after that I will have a video date with my wife. At 2:00pm my buddy Eduardo is coming over. When he leaves, I will try to go out for my jog. All in all, I have a relaxing but very busy day ahead of me. I guess I should get on with it.

    Have a great day folks!

  • Day 862

Today is the tenth day of my latest kick at this can, and I have a lot to show for it.

    • I am wearing pants that I was not even able to button up a month ago!
    • According to my fitness watch I am on an 11-day streak for hitting my steps goal!
    • I have dropped over fifteen pounds!

All of these are great, but I know I have a long way to go.

The daily steps goal on my fitness watch is progressive, which means that the more steps I take over previous days, the higher the goal is. According to Garmin, my steps goal for today is 14,610. Maybe that is the reason I let Her Floofness take longer than usual on her walk this morning… I would walk ahead and then circle back to where she was. When I come in from our morning walks my watch usually reads around 2300 steps. Today it was 3200. Excellent. I have a long way to go before hitting that ultimate goal, but I also have a lot of day ahead of me.

Yesterday’s workout did in fact beat my previous one. I jogged six kilometres (with all but one lap under 9:00/km) and walked one more. I wrote yesterday morning that I did not know if I would be able to hit my new workout goal (to jog 6km), but I did. My next goal: to jog 7km. Will I do that today? I do not know. Will I try? Count on it.

My eating yesterday was a bit problematic. Following my workout I ate a protein bar (as I had said I would try). I was still feeling hungry, and I went to the car to take some almonds. I am looking forward to not having any almonds in the car and having to get through the day without them… or at least buying the actual recommended portion of almonds and not just taking a scoop and calling that ‘a bit more than a handful.’ I will keep trying.

One change to my behaviour on the program this time that I was never very good with is that I am making sure to add a teaspoon of fibre to two shakes per day. The result? I have had successful (and not painful) bowel movements almost every day since I started the program. This may not continue, but I will try! Those BMs have not always been first thing in the morning (as would normally be the case for me), so the potential weight loss they might represent would only show the following day. For example, this morning’s movement was only after my meal replacement.

I have to run to the supermarket to pick up coffee. I plan to pick up precisely nothing else. Oh, if they have the sugar free gum that I like then I will buy some of that too. A friend is coming over for coffee today and I realized this morning that I don’t have enough left to make a pot (I made a half pot this morning). I want to be a good host!

The routine of hitting the treadmill right after my second shake has worked well the last few days. I know that Monday was a disaster when I pushed my workout before my second shake, but this adjustment has been great. I have found I have the energy and strength to go harder and farther once I’ve fueled my body. I will do that again today.

With that said, I am going to get moving. I want to run to the store before my buddy comes.

    Have a great day folks!
